HOW TO BECOME A COPYWRITER

If you’ve ever found yourself just tired of the 9 to 5 work day and looking for a refreshing change, this may be the perfect option for you.  Being a copywriter is one way that you can gain the freedom that you are looking for while having fun at the same time.  Trust me when I say, there is a lot of hard work when you first start but you find a lot of joy.

I know what you’re thinking.  Can I really make a living as a copywriter? Absolutely!  Writers are needed more than ever before.  We are in a time where written content on the web is a vital part of solidifying sales.  Buyers simply want to have proof by reading numbers and facts before making online purchases.  This can only be done if there is some willing to do the research and produce the answers they are looking for.  Businesses are willing to pay writers to produce up-to-date written information about their industry and how their products stand within the market.  This keeps their customer engaged with blogs, emails, updated website pages, eBooks, case studies, the list goes on.

So, what do you have to do?  You just have to start.  You’ve already done the first step by researching content on how you can get started.  There are no real insider secrets, there are no exams, and there is no degree necessary.  It’s all about researching what you want to write about and start writing.  You can easily find a support group on social media platforms with millions of other copywriters that are on the same path you are.  Here are some simple steps to begin a new career as a copywriter:

CHOOSE A NICHE

Before you get started writing, you want to sit down and contemplate on what your hobbies are.  You really want to think long and hard about what you like to do.  This process will help you choose your niche and get you started writing.  Your work days will fly by so quickly when you are writing about topics that interest you.  I’ve found myself putting on classical music and working 14-hour days without even realizing it.

PRACTICE

The hardest part about this whole process is sitting down and writing your first piece of copy.  To start you want to do is find a copywriter that is working under your niche.  You may find them on a freelance website, on YouTube, or Facebook.  Look at their articles, grab a pen and paper, and write their work by hand.  This technique has been recommended by the greatest copywriters out there.  Handwriting the copy will help you to understand what you need to do as a professional in your niche.  I’ve done it myself when I was first learning and it just clicked one day.  From that day on, I was able to write my own content with no problem.  Writing good copy is writing how you would naturally speak to a person.  You want to make it very easy to understand and grasp for the most novice reader.

CREATE POLISHED ARTICLES

What people always ask is, “What do I write?”.  The answer simple answer is anything.  Take a topic under your niche and just writing about it.  Try to make it to 1,000 words about one topic.  Don’t put any pressure on yourself to be perfect.  Just tell yourself that no one is going to see the piece because you are just practicing.  If you don’t like it, just throw it away and start over.  You can make corrections later.  The goal is to start training your brain to get used to creating written material on a regular basis.  Repeat this process 3 times.  By the third piece, you will have gotten it.  For me, it took about a full week to practice and get all of my original content created.  So, don’t put any pressure on yourself.  You will get faster with writing as the days go by.  Start working on professional pieces that you want to showcase to potential clients.  Use free online services like Grammarly.com to proofread and correct your grammatical errors.  I suggest that you have at least 6 pieces of good quality work.  Focus on the types of copy that you’re interested in, like creating emails, website content, blog articles, etc. all on the topic of your niche.

CREATE A WEBSITE

The next step is to research how to create a copywriting website.  It may feel a little intimidating when you first realize that you have to create a polished website when you haven’t even mastered writing your articles.  However, it’s not as hard as you think.  DON’T PANIC.  There are so many platforms out there that provide websites, so just pick one that you feel you can work with.  YouTube videos will show you step-by-step on how to design your website.  Choose a website template that also incorporates a blog or one that allows you to manually input one.  Go to sites like pexels.com to get free professional photos that you can use on your website.  Upload your articles to the appropriate locations and – BAM!  You have a professional website that you can use to promote your services.

SEARCH FOR WORK

The entire process will probably take you about two weeks to complete if you are not familiar with anything.  If you have a full-time job it may take longer.  Just stick with it and it will pay off in the end.  It’s so satisfying to know that you just created something on your own, and you are already on your way to escaping the 9 to 5.  You can send cold emails to local businesses about what you are doing and offer to do work for them.  You can also check job postings websites, like problogger.com, blogging pro, etc.

After going through all these steps, I personally realized that I still had a lot more questions.  Everyone’s niche is different and I didn’t know if my portfolio pieces were even client worthy.  So, I purchased a training course from an expert copywriter.  It was the best decision that I could have made.  I was able to get all my questions answered in a timely fashion.  It provided me access to a private support group that has live Q&A’s every single week, which I found extremely helpful.  They brought up topics that I haven’t even thought of, such as a having a “get-to-know-you” business questionnaire so that you can correctly produce content based on business needs.  I discovered the building blocks of copy and I had a precise formula for how each piece of copy should be written.  Plus, I was able to get feedback from professional copywriters from around the world.  Literally.  So many of them decided to work remotely from Bali, Thailand, and other remote countries just because this job gave them the ability to work from virtually anywhere.  Here is the link to the course that helped me launch my new career: https://www.writeyourwaytofreedom.co/a/13857/bVxth2xV.  I hope this helps.
